Westerbork, 1942<\/em>I wish I were an animal
\nIt\u2019s hard here at the human end,
\nTo be a person and be real,
\nAnd not just to pretend.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m very happy to intone,
\nI wish I were a bird,
\nI\u2019d sing and sing for me alone,
\nI know it sounds absurd.<\/p>\n

I wish I were a little pup,
\nSo cuddly and so small,
\nThey always lift your spirits up,
\nThey\u2019re loved by one and all.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d have no need to be ashamed
\nTo go where e\u2019er I roam,
\nOut on the streets I can\u2019t be blamed,
\nFor what\u2019s now done at home.<\/p>\n

I wish I were a mighty horse,
\nSo noble and so proud,
\nAn animal of such great force,
\nHis presence is quite loud.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d let the circus pamper me,
\nFor one month or one year
\nAnd when I\u2019d learned enough to flee,
\nI\u2019d start a new career<\/p>\n

I wish I were a donkey,
\n\u2018Hee-haw\u2019 is all I\u2019d say,
\n\u2018Cos donkeys only know haw-hee,
\nThat\u2019s all they say all day.<\/p>\n

But if someone asked to marry me,
\nI\u2019d say \u2018no way\u2019, drop dead!
\nWhat a real ass I would be
\nTo say hee-haw instead.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d be a chicken in its run
\nSo plump and round and fine,
\nI\u2019d cackle in the morning sun
\nAnd have a grand old time.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d bring my eggs to the market square
\nAnd sell them under the table.
\nLet the CCD inspect my wares,
\nI\u2019ll just run as soon as I\u2019m able.<\/p>\n

I wish I was a tiny flee,
\nThen life would be the best.
\nTo suck men\u2019s blood would be such glee,
\nI\u2019d love to be a pest.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d pierce and prod and jab and prick
\nAt men both big and small
\nI know exactly where to stick,
\nI\u2019d drive them up the wall.<\/p>\n

You do know what I mean, I\u2019m sure,
\nExactly what I desire.
\nBut what can I do, I must endure,
\nI was born in human attire.<\/p>\n

To live like a flee or a bird on the wing
\nIs as easy as one-two-three.
\nBut to live the life of a human being
\nIs the hardest thing, mark me.
